UPDATE ON 14 STUDENTS CHARGED IN UofT'S CRIMINALIZATION OF DISSENT

Criminal charges and restrictive bail conditions imposed on the Fight Fees 14 are finally starting to be withdrawn after a long drawn out legal battle. Nine of the fourteen activists have had their charges completely rescinded. We are calling on all community allies to continue to show their solidarity with the remaining five accused in the University of Toronto’s crackdown on student dissent. With your continued support, we are hopeful that full exoneration will be achieved for all of the FF14 and that we can continue the fight for accessible education and a democratic university. The Committee for Just Education Presents - "CELEBRATING RESISTANCE" - Thursday January 29th at 7pm, New College Student Lounge

OVER 100 PROFESSORS SUPPORT THE "FIGHT FEES 14"

More than 100 professors at UofT and other post-secondary institutions have sent their support for the 14 students and allies who were criminally charged for allegedly participating in a peaceful sit-in at Simcoe Hall to protest increasing fees on March 20th 2008. Rather than addressing the issues of accessibility to education, the University of Toronto administration resorted to tactics of intimidation and repression including initiating criminal and Code of Student Conduct investigations.

Criminal charges and restrictive bail conditions imposed on the Fight Fees 14 are finally starting to be withdrawn after a long drawn out legal battle. Nine of the fourteen activists have had their charges completely rescinded. We need to keep the pressure on the administration to drop charges for the remaining five! –Read more about the upcoming celebratory event

PART-TIME UNION REVITALIZES SPACE BY PLANTING BEAUTIFUL NEW GARDEN

APUS held a wonderful Opening Ceremony for our New Garden on Monday, August 13th, 5:00-6:30 p.m.

Come visit our APUS community garden at the Association of Part-time Undergraduate Students (APUS) located at 100 Devonshire Place (1 block south of Bloor St./1 block east of St.George St)

Students and community members pitch in over a weekend to make the space beautiful!
BEFORE APUS Supporters
Celebrate Our New Garden!
AFTER

STOPPING 2nd EVICTION WITHIN A YEAR!
Reclaim Student Space We Have Now!

Unfortunately APUS is again fighting an eviction from its new office space located at 100 Devonshire Place (the Margaret Fletcher Building). The University is planning to build several buildings in the area including a ‘Center for High Performance Sport’ directly on top of our current student union office. This project coupled with further development of the Varsity Stadium will be relying on extensive student levies to fund its operating costs.

STUDENTS TO PAY FOR A BUILDING TO BE BUILT ON APUS SPACE:
APUS maintains that these fees are in reality a ‘tuition fee by another name’. Yet the UofT administration has repeatedly ignored the voices of students - that buildings and facilities should be paid for by the Government and University not the students. Even in the face of a resounding NO vote of 80% against the Varsity stadium levy in 2002, the administration has consistently pressured student groups to accept proposals that are not in their interests. They will be asking part-time students to pay 75% of the operating costs for a proposed building, which is planned to flatten their student union.

WE ARE CALLING FOR SPACE PERMANENCE!
Our current space is wonderfully suited to our members needs and it is attached to the part-time college, is child-friendly, has a kitchen, a beautiful front lawn and a large meeting space. APUS is urging students, unions, organizations, and community groups to join us once again in sending a clear message to UofT:

  1. Space permanence for APUS in our NEW office in the Margaret Fletcher building.
  2. Against any plans to build on top of APUS’ current building and the front lawn.
  3. No more downloading the costs of buildings and operating expenses on students and users.

For more Information please contact APUS at 416 978-3993. We will continue to gather signatures from our petition please add your name & comments – click here! (link for the new petition will be updated shortly)

SPACE UPDATE - WINTER 2007
We are very happy to report that due to the amazing support of our members and coalition partners, our programming office is now relocated to the Margaret Fletcher building. Although the move took away precious time from our organizational work, we are happy to say we have now comfortably settled in. We are already planning many upcoming events, working groups and organizing around a variety of issues.

Part-time students and community members celebrated APUS’ new Admin/Programming Space
at the House Warming event on Jan 31, 5-9 pm

Unfortunately even as we have just moved in, we still need to continue to advocate for making the space accessible and ensuring this remains our permanent home for many years to come. Please join us and find out more about the ongoing space campaign and organizational issues & events.

(IN)-ACCESS TO OUR NEW SPACE

We are sad to say that our new space is not yet physically accessible. Although the university promised they would put in a ramp and push button door in the Fall 2006, they are now saying this will not happen until spring 2007. This was only the basic renovation which is necessary to make our space accessible and it is unacceptable that some of our members are not able to come to visit the new space. We have sent a letter to the university regarding this issue. (view word version / view pdf version)

Please support this by signing our petition or writing a letter to the university. You can also become involved in the APUS Accessibility working group.

TUITION Announcement expected soon!

Premier Dalton McGuinty is preparing to increase tuition fees for September 2006...

The government is publically suggesting that students in Ontario should be ready to face tuition fee increases of 5 to 6 percent! This of course doesn't include deregulated programs like Commerce and Computer Science, where students could face an average increase of 10-15 percent in their tuition fees!

What can YOU do???

  1. Tell your friends! Tell your parents! Tell your teachers! Tell everyone and anyone that you know . Have them call, email or fax Dalton McGuinty and your local MPP.
  2. Prepare to take action. Attend the EMERGENCY PICKET at the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, Bay and Wellesley St, the day after the government makes its announcement. SEND THE MESSAGE -- STUDENTS ALREADY PAY TOO MUCH!

If you have any questions, please contact Chris Ramsaroop at 416-978-7594, chris.ramsaroop@utoronto.ca

Seek Wisdom Even Unto China

APUS, GSU, SAC, the Historical Studies Dept, Thaqalayn Muslim Association, and the Chinese Undergraduate Association are inviting you for this Saturday to ANOTHER groundbreaking event: "Seek Wisdom Even Unto China".

Location:
Isabel Bader Theatre, (93 Charles Street)
Saturday October 1 7PM

Chinese history, Acrobats and musicians.

Why China?

China has announced this to be the 600th Year Anniversary of the Voyages of Admiral Zheng He, who inspired the "Arabian Nights" tales of "Sindbad the Sailor".

Recently, a body of academics and scholars have begun to unearth a wealth of information about Zheng He.
Though little is known about his life outside of his grand expeditions, even within China, there is now evidence to suggest that Zheng He arrived in well before Columbus and other explorers.

Inspired by this story, this event seeks to explore many dimensions of Chinese heritage, from history to art, music and culture.

We will have a master Chinese-Arabic Calligrapher, Haji Noor Deen Mi Guangjiang, and an internationally acclaimed photographer, Peter Sanders, giving us a glimpse of China with his photography. I am confident that you will enjoy the experience immensely.

More info is available at www.sac.utoronto.ca.

Tickets are $15 and $10 for students (General Admission seating)

University of Toronto Part-time Undergraduate Students Respond to Departure of U of T President

(Toronto) The Association of Part time Undergraduate Students (APUS) at the University of Toronto is concerned about the premature departure of U of T President Robert Birgeneau.

APUS believes that Birgeneau’s resignation as President sends a distressing message about the state of internal affairs within the university’s administration. By not finishing his term, Birgeneau leaves the university and his mandate of access and equity on shaky grounds. The impact of his departure is further compounded by the recent departure of several high-ranking University officials, including Vice-President and Provost Shirley Neuman, and Governing Council Chair Tom Simpson.

APUS believes that the turmoil is symptomatic of a larger problem; that of ill-conceived and unsustainable changes that are occurring at the university – the move away from a publicly-funded accessible post-secondary towards one of increasing user fees (tuition) and corporate influence and private control.

APUS calls on the UofT to renew its commitment to public education by:

APUS-SAC Teaching Award: Nominate your best professor!

If you had an instructor who you believe deserves special recognition because of his or her exceptional teaching ability, then you should consider nominating them for an APUS-SAC Undergraduate Teaching Award.

Receiving such an award can help a deserving instructor achieve greater recognition at the University, and reward him or her for going out of their way to give individual attention to students or otherwise inspire students and enrich their university experience.

You must nominate an instructor for a particular course, but it does NOT have to be a course you took in this particular academic year. You can nominate an instructor you had in the past, so long as he or she was still teaching in as of 2002-2003, at any campus or faculty of the University of Toronto.

The deadline for award nominations is Friday February 13, 2004.

Nomination forms are available at:

The Award winners will be announced in March.

What APUS has to say about the SCSU referendum!
UTSC referendum issues

Vote NO on January 20th-21st !

TOP 10 REASONS YOU SHOULD VOTE NO: (view pdf mail-out)

  1. This referendum is a sham.
This referendum is a direct violation of the SCSU by-laws, and will have serious consequences for the university
  2. Loss of student voice.
SCSU does not differentiate between Part-Time & Full-Time students resulting in no specific Part-Time voice.
  3. SCSU has NO Part-Time representation.
SCSU eliminated the Part-Time commissioner position without any discussion, further marginalizing Part-Time students.
  4. APUS has unique Part-Time programming.
APUS has developed unique Part-Time programming that includes financial aid & Part-Time student lobbying.
  5. Health plan not guaranteed under SCSU.
APUS currently offers an inexpensive health plan. There is a possibility that there would be no health plan!
  6. Your student fees will increase.
Under the proposed plan your fees will rise for the summer session from $21.76 to $42.90.
  7. SCSU is ineffective in regard to Part-Time students.
For several years APUS has provided funding to SCSU every semester for campus specific Part-Time programming. APUS has been asking SCSU what they have done and will do specifically for Part-Time students with no response.
  8. No Consultation.
There has been no consultation with APUS regarding this referendum, and APUS was promised that there would be no referendum by the President of SCSU (Dec. 5th, 2003).
  9. United we stand, divided we fall.
By SCSU partitioning Part-Time students, the united voice of Part-Time students who share similar issues is effectively weakened.
  10. Who’s next?
By forcing the Part-Time referendum along with the Full-Time vote, Student Affairs and Governing Council have actively tried to pit student organizations against one another. If this referendum wins, it will act as a springboard for further student segregation.

45 Minutes
Director: Mike Johnston

Thursday, September 11, 2003
First Showing: 7pm
Second Showing: 8 pm
Bloor Cinema, 506 Bloor Street West
Admission: $2

*The Director will be on hand for questions after each screening*

After graduating from Trent University, Mike Johnston found himself unemployed, crushed by his student loan and plagued by collection agencies. He decided to make a film about his student loan to pay it off. Begging and borrowing cameras, Johnston launched on a hilarious and horrifying ride through debt-ridden student life.Students working at the local pizzeria tally up their combined debt on the cash register - a total of $90,000 in one stop. In fact, Trent students have run up a combined debt of $54 million in the last four years, at interest rates of 12 per cent and up! But the absurdity doesn't stop there. The university itself is wallowing deeper in debt as a strategy to get out of debt. With dogged determination and acidic deadpan irony, Johnston follows the money and takes politicians to task to expose the dangerous lunacy of the 'new economics of education.'

Update on SARS & UofT

From: Shirley Neuman, Vice-President & Provost, Angela Hildyard, Vice-President, Human Resources
Re: Disruption of Academic Program - SARS Outbreak

We are writing to update on how the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak is affecting our community. Up to date information is available on the University of Toronto website at: www.newsandevents.utoronto.ca. Please consult this website for current information and links to relevant websites.

The following information is current as of 2:00 PM March 31, 2003.

Health Sciences Faculties – Disruption in Academic Program

The SARS outbreak control measures imposed by the provincial government have had an effect on our health sciences programs. Specifically, measures to contain the spread of disease within and between hospitals have meant that many elective and non-clinical activities have been cancelled in affiliated teaching hospitals. At this time, activities involving attendance by health sciences students at the hospitals have been cancelled. As a precautionary move to help in the containment of the outbreak, the Faculty of Medicine is cancelling events this week that bring students who have been in the hospitals over the last 10 days into large group settings or events that bring together students from multiple hospital sites. This measure is being taken to reduce the risk of propagation of disease. As a result, classes, examinations and other activities for medical students in years 2-4 have been suspended for this week.

A disruption in the academic program has been declared under the Grading Practices Policy Section II.3. At this time, these procedures are being used only for the Health Sciences Divisions as a result of the need to postpone some sessions and examinations. Affected students will be kept fully informed of changes to their programs and will be treated in a fair manner.

University of Toronto at Scarborough

At this time we are aware of one student who was investigated in hospital for possible SARS. The diagnosis of SARS was NOT confirmed. The University worked closely with the Department of Public Health on this case. Classes and programs are continuing as scheduled on the Scarborough campus.

University Community at Large

We remind our community that at this time the Ontario Commissioner of Public Health, Dr. Colin d'Cunha, is stressing that the risk of being infected by SARS remains low for those who are not in a risk group. Risk groups are presently those individuals who have recently travelled to China, Hong Kong, Singapore, or Vietnam and those who have been in close personal contact with a person withSARS.

Individuals who have been asked to put themselves into isolation are: • those who have had close personal contact with a person with SARS and did not wear a mask

Individuals who are contacts of people in quarantine are to observe isolation precautions when in contact with the quarantined individual, but are not themselves to be placed in quarantine.

Travellers returning from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, or Vietnam are to observe the precautions requested by Health Canada. If they experience symptoms within 10 days of their return they are asked to isolate themselves, and contact public health authorities. In the absence of symptoms, they may presently continue with their activities.

Those planning travel to affected countries should consult the appropriate travel advisories.

We will continue to monitor this situation and update you as needed. At the present time, the University, other than the affected Health Sciences programs, will continue to operate as scheduled. Staff will continue their normal employment duties. We are maintaining regular contact with staff unions on work related matters. Where issues arise that are relevant to the operations of specific Divisions communications will be sent to affected faculty, staff and students.

PROTEST HIGH TUITION FEES!
FREE FOOD, MUSIC, & SPEAKERS
When: Thursday April 3
Where: 4 pm Rally (4:30 Governing Council)
Simcoe Hall, 27 Kings' College Circle
(beside Convocation Hall)

There is a proposed 1.9% tuition fee increases in undergraduate Arts & Science Programs; more for deregulated programs like computer science, commerce, and engineering (5%), and professional programs like medicine and law (5% for continuing students; up 11% for first year law students).

University of Toronto will try on Thursday April 3, 2003 to increase tuition fees to further unmanageable levels. Please come out and let the university administration that we want an education system that is ACCESSIBLE TO ALL!

Post-secondary educations are publicly owned; the public wants an end to the increasing levels of tuition and the unnecessary burden of debt that future generations will be forced to pay back. The community says no to the erosion of public post-secondary education. This year we are seeing students:

The strategy of putting 30% of tuition increases into student funding is not working for part-time students. Part-time undergraduate students contribute 12% of tuition revenue but are not receiving their fair share back in grant-based financial aid through UTAPS and Noah Meltz grant. For example, in the 2000-2001 academic year, part-time students received about $424,000 in UTAPS and Noah Meltz grants, which is only about 4% of the total amount given to all undergraduates. Part-time students are missing out annually on about $827,000, their share of the university's financial aid!

There has been a 40% decline in the number of Ontario students accessing the Ontario Student Assistance Plan (OSAP). The most a single student can get in OSAP funding is $9500/year, while professional stream tuition is between $16,000 and $22,000. Middle-income students are particularly vulnerable as they do not qualify for OSAP and hence are not eligible for University of Toronto Assistance Plan (UTAPS), and most bursaries are needed for low-income students.

CFS Referendum Remember to vote November 5, 6, 7!

Message from the 2002-2003 APUS Executive Friday October 25, 2002

Dear part-time students,

In February 2002, APUS took out trial membership in the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS). CFS is an organization made up of various student groups hailing from many college and university campuses across Canada. The Federation organizes its members on a democratic co-operative basis, with the clear goal of change in education for students.

On November 5th, 6th and 7th, 2002, there will be a referendum for APUS members on the question of becoming full members of CFS. In regard to this upcoming referendum, the APUS Board of Directors has taken a "yes" position of support - i.e. in favour of joining CFS as full members.

Here are some of the reasons why. For part-time students, it is crucial for the Canadian government to have a sound understanding of part-time study, and how important part-time study is to many students pursuing their post-secondary education. APUS joining CFS would ensure that the issues facing part-time students, such as funding and financial aid, would be fully represented in lobbying at both the provincial and the national levels of government.

Already, APUS has made its mark within CFS by encouraging the representation of part-time issues. In fact, APUS has to this day attended two provincial meetings and one national meeting of CFS, and has been an active force in instituting changes within the Federation (e.g., to bylaws, research policy).

Along with government lobbying, CFS is committed to presenting accurate research on the financial realities that students face. Directives from the student groups within CFS help in developing alternative funding proposals geared to student needs. This is key to confronting existing government policy.

CFS also provides cost-saving services to students. By now you should have received in the mail a CFS discount card called "Studentsaver." It gets you discounts at hundreds of businesses in Toronto and thousands across the country. This card was a benefit of trial membership in CFS this year, and would be a regular benefit of full membership. The APUS Health Plan has also been improved as a result of joining the National Student Health Network, which is coordinated by CFS on a non-profit basis.

Some of you might remember the CFS National Day of Action on February 6th last year. That campaign brought out tens of thousands of students, including many from U of T, who rallied together to march to Queen's Park in protest of rising tuition fees. APUS was a part of this effort and had a huge turn-out of part-time students who marched through the streets, making their voices heard.

All part-time undergraduates are eligible to vote in the CFS referendum. It can't be emphasized too much how important it is for all part-time students to cast their vote. So please don't forget to vote, vote, vote!!!

Sincerely,

Emily Sadowski, APUS President
Sangeeta Kerai, APUS Vice-president
Nadalena Reid, APUS Executive Secretary
David Melville, APUS Treasurer

Question

All part-time undergraduates (3.5 credits or less) at U of T are eligible to vote on APUS membership in the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS). Full-time undergraduates will be voting on CFS membership simultaneously. To vote, you must show a current T-card and one other piece of ID with your name printed on it.

The question on the ballot will read as follows:

Preamble:

The Canadian Federation of Students is a national and provincial students' organization with over 450,000 members. The Federation was formed in 1981 to advocate for an affordable, high quality system of post-secondary education, and to provide cost-saving services to students.

The current membership fee for the Canadian Federation of Students is $3.42 per session for full-time students or $1.71 per session for part-time students. The current membership fee for the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario is $2.85 per session for full-time students or $1.43 per session for part-time students. The fees are adjusted up or down each year by the rate of increase or decrease in the Canadian Consumer Price Index (CPI) during the previous calendar year.

By voting "yes" below, you are indicating that you support an additional portion ($6.27 for full-time students or $3.14 for part-time students per session) to be collected with your student society fee as described above. Each student would pay the fee through the appropriate student society, either the Students' Administrative Council (SAC), the Association of Part-Time Undergraduate Students (APUS), or the Scarborough Campus Students' Union (SCSU).

Question:

Are you in favour of membership in the Canadian Federation of Students and the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario, as described in the preamble?

List of polling stations

St. George Campus:

UTM/Erindale Campus:

Scarborough Campus:

Current Issues

Tuition fees have increased by over 141% in the past 10 years. As a result many of us will graduate with a student debt load over $25,000. In some programs where they de-regulated tuition fees, students are paying as much as $22,000 a year for their education. Now, Ontario has the second highest tuition fees in the country, but the worst professor/student ratio.

Working Together

Successes But when students work together, we can make a difference. In Quebec, students have had a tuition freeze for 25 of the past 30 years - they pay less than half what Ontario students do. In Newfoundland & Labrador, tuition fees have actually been reduced. Here in Ontario, we had tuition fee increases of 10% year-after-year throughout the 1990s. But after tens of thousands of students rallied in the streets, the government reduced the increase from 10% to 2%. And that is why we should join the Canadian Federation of Students.

The Federation

The CFS has been organized for over 20 years and today they represent over 450,000 university and college students, both provincially and nationally.

Working together through the CFS, students have won tuition freezes and reductions in 5 provinces. That's because when we pool our resources together, we can produce research, meet with the federal and provincial governments and organize campaigns to raise public awareness and influence policy.

The Services

CFS also provides cost-saving services to students, such as the discount card called "Studentsaver." It gets you discounts at over 500 restaurants and businesses in Toronto and thousands across the country. The APUS Health Plan for part-time students has been improved this year as a result of joining the National Student Health Network, which is coordinated by CFS on a non-profit basis. For full-time students, the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is also included in CFS membership.

Remember to Vote

When you go to vote in the Referendum on November 5, 6 and 7, think of the following 3 questions:

  1. Do you want to be part of the effort to reduce tuition fees?
  2. Do you want to be part of the effort to increase government funding - to improve the quality of our education?
  3. Do you think that the only way that we can make a difference in government policy, is if we work together - all across the province and all across the country?

If you answer YES to those questions, then vote YES to the Canadian Federation of Students.

If you want more information, pick up a leaflet or the APUS newsletter, The VOICE, at the APUS office, Sidney Smith Hall room 1089, or check out the CFS table in front of Sid Smith Hall.

Make sure you vote.

GRANTS NOT FEES: Call for a Universal Post-Secondary Education Act!

Seminar and forum reminder, please forward to students, staff, faculty and community members...

==============

==========

A UNIVERSAL POST SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT

While some provinces in Canada have frozen or reduced tuition fees, other countries have eliminated these outdated barriers (for a recent example see Ireland). This will be the first U of T meeting to learn about and start working on enshrining the right to free post-secondary education in a UNIVERSAL POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT.

A UNIVERSAL POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT will ensure that all residents of Canada are guaranteed to post secondary education without the imposition of user fees.

Some principle criteria include:

  1. universality: all persons in the province or territory must be entitled to public post-secondary education on uniform terms and conditions;
  2. portability: access to post-secondary education programs must be maintained when a person moves or travels within Canada or travels outside the country; and
  3. accessibility: full access to free post-secondary education, that must not be unimpeded by financial or other barriers.
  4. public administration
  5. comprehensiveness

Speakers on the following issues:

Last year, the University of Toronto spent over $100,000 trying to convince students to pay a special levy for an administration envisioned building no one wanted. The plan was overwhelmingly rejected by students who voted 80% against the levy. During this time, students and community members met to discuss an alternative vision of the Varsity Stadium site. Now it is time to make those alternate plans a reality. Discussions will continue on Tuesday Evening, October 22, 6-8:00 p.m. at the Bahen Center IT, 40 St. George Street, Room 1230.

We will work towards clearly articulating a student-centered, student run, corporate free, nonprofit, student friendly vision, based on the principle that students will not pay through a levy. Funding for the project must be raised through government and university resources. We are inviting students and community members to come together to discuss and plan for an alternative vision for the Varsity Stadium site.

APUS Focus Groups

The Association of Part-time Undergraduate Students (APUS) is in the process of initiating a research project that will explore the experiences and concerns of part-time undergrads at the University of Toronto.

The first step of the project is to conduct some focus groups with part-time undergrads as a way of getting a handle on their needs and experiences. From the results of the focus groups we will design a survey that will be administered to all part-time undergrads at U of T.

Concerned about classes, financial aid or debt? What about childcare? Do you have something to say about student services at U of T? APUS needs your input. We want to know about your experiences and concerns so we can better serve you.

By helping APUS to determine your needs you will benefit present and future students.Volunteer for a focus group and make your voice heard!

Vote No to the Varsity Centre Levy

  1. The U of T Administration wants to make students pay for a new Athletics facility that should be paid for by government funding. All University of Toronto students at the St. George campus are being asked to vote on a mandatory student levy to support the construction and operating costs of the proposed "Varsity Centre for Field and Ice Sports".
  2. U of T wants an extra $25 a year per full-time student and $7.50 per part time student for the next 3 years, and for the next 25 years $70/full time student and $21/part time student, increasing 3% every year. The project would be funded two-thirds by the student levy and only one-third from University funds.
  3. You will soon receive a referendum ballot at your home through the mail to vote yes or no to this levy.

APUS, along with other student unions, urges you to vote NO to this levy. Not because we don't want more athletic space, but because:

The University is trying to build on the backs of students. We cannot allow them to load this cost onto us. When you get the levy ballot in the mail, VOTE NO! Students already pay more than our fair share! The deadline to return the ballot is APRIL 12.

FEBRUARY 6 - FREEZE THE FEES!

On Wednesday February 6th, thousands of college, university, and high school students from across Toronto converged at Queen's Park to protest ever-rising tuition fees in Ontario. Amid the calls for tuition freeze was a significant demand by many for a rollback or even an elimination of tuition fees!

The message is clear:

GOVERNING COUNCIL - UofT READY TO RAISE THE FEES AGAIN!

The highest governing body at the University of Toronto is a driving influence on provincial policy around post-secondary education issues of funding and tuition.

GC Hall of Shame (What GC has done in the past)

High tuition

High tuition is limiting access to post-secondary education. Fewer people from low and middle-income backgrounds are accessing our schools. A two-tiered education system is unacceptable! Education is a right! We must continue the fight for a universally accessible education for all! For more information, please contact:

There is a growing crisis in Ontario's Universities and Colleges. Increased enrolment due to the echo baby boom is stressing the system and will be compounded by the retirement of boomer-aged teaching faculty. Coupled with a severe funding crunch, growing labour dissatisfaction and skyrocketing tuition, there are very real concerns that Ontario's post-secondary system is literally crumbling.

Will your family be able to afford tuition? Will there be enough spaces and qualified faculty to teach the double cohort and the echo generation? How is the quality of education being affected by these stresses, and by the increased presence of corporations on campus?
